Finding Hope and Home at Ash Villa

In May 2023, my life took an unexpected turn. My name is Mickela, and I arrived at Ash Villa under emergency circumstances after a 15-year stay with my foster family ended abruptly. The transition was overwhelming, especially as I have ADHD, a mild learning disability, and anxiety.

A Warm Welcome

From the moment I stepped into Ash Villa, Rachel, the home manager, and her team made it their mission to ensure I felt safe and supported. I remember Rachel describing me as a frightened young girl in need of a hug, and she was right. I had never looked after myself or been given the freedom to learn how to, making the change even more daunting.

Building Confidence and Independence

On my second day, Rachel asked about my favourite foods, leading to a shocking revelation for her. I had never chosen my own dinner or been in a shop to pick out my food, this moment marked the beginning of my journey towards independence. Rachel and Lista, a support worker, took me to Asda for my first ever shopping experience. Their support helped me manage my anxiety in the bustling environment.

Small Steps, Big Changes

Day by day, Rachel and the team worked with me on various skills, from making shopping lists to planning meals. Our outings, like a memorable trip to Skegness, gradually built my trust and confidence. With each passing day, I started feeling more at home and comfortable with the staff, who always listened to and respected my opinions.

Growing Independence

By October, Ash Villa truly felt like my home. A younger support worker, closer to my age, helped me realise my potential. They encouraged me to take on more responsibilities, such as managing personal hygiene and keeping my room tidy. These small victories were monumental for someone who had never had such freedoms.

Facing the Future

With the unwavering support of Rachel and the Ash Villa team, I began to venture out into the community, starting with supervised trips to Asda and gradually progressing to independent visits. Each step, no matter how small, was a significant boost to my confidence.

A New Beginning

Thanks to Ash Villa, I am now leaving the care system after being in it since I was two years old. I have a stable relationship, my own home, and a baby on the way dreams I once thought impossible. My story is a testament to the power of support and belief. With the right team behind you, anything is possible.
I hope my journey inspires others in the care system to believe in their potential and strive for their dreams. Ash Villa showed me that with the right support, you can achieve anything. Here’s to the future and all the possibilities it holds.

“Ash Villa offers a nurturing environment where individuals like Mickela can thrive, providing the support and encouragement needed to build a brighter future”
