Doncaster care home resident recognised as “Most Inspirational” at Leaving Care Awards

Isabelle “Izzy” Farmer, who lives at Neville Lodge, a specialist residential autism service in Doncaster, has been recognised in the “Most Inspirational” category at the Leaving Care Awards.

Neville Lodge, operated by Milewood, provides purpose-built accommodation, activities, and 24-hour support for adults living with autism, offering highly individualised packages of care designed to help each person “live their best life.”

Izzy, 21, moved to Neville Lodge in June 2025 following a carefully planned and successful transition period. She was nominated for the award by her personal assistant, Abbie Talbot, who has supported her since the age of 17.

Abbie said: “I have had the privilege of supporting Izzy since she was 17 years old. When Izzy turned 18, she was placed under a Section 3 of the Mental Health Act and spent nearly three years in secure units. During this challenging period, Izzy demonstrated extraordinary resilience, ambition, and determination and despite facing circumstances that often felt overwhelming and moments where it seemed there was no light at the end of the tunnel, Izzy never gave up.

“Her unwavering commitment to her recovery and her desire to prove she was well enough to have the Section removed were truly inspiring. Izzy’s journey is a testament to her strength and perseverance and she not only overcame significant personal challenges but also transformed her experiences into a source of empowerment for others.”

Izzy works as a peer support worker, providing guidance and encouragement to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Her lived experience enables her to connect deeply with those she supports, offering empathy and hope in ways that few others can.

Beyond her professional role, Izzy is a powerful advocate for change within mental health services. She has delivered numerous public speaking engagements, sharing her story with professionals and stakeholders. Through these presentations, Izzy highlights the realities of life in secure units and offers valuable insights into what improvements are needed to better support individuals in similar situations.

Shelly Smith, team leader at Neville Lodge, praised Izzy’s courage and the dedication she shows every day: “Izzy is an incredible young woman whose strength inspires all of us. She has embraced her new life at Neville Lodge with positivity, determination, and a desire to help others and we are immensely proud of everything she has achieved.”

Martyn Heginbotham, chief executive of Milewood, added: “Izzy’s award is thoroughly deserved. Her resilience and commitment to improving not only her own life but the lives of others is truly exceptional. At Milewood, we are committed to empowering people to thrive, and Izzy is a shining example of what is possible when the right support, environment, and determination come together.”
