Scarborough’s McGinty’s Irish Club was awash with colour, laughter and seaside sparkle as Milewood hosted a spectacular Fancy Dress Afternoon for the people it supports, their families, and the wider community.

More than 100 guests came together from Milewood services across the region, on Thursday, September 25, for an afternoon packed with music, games, sweet treats and creative activities. The event was made extra special by the fantastic costumes on show, as everyone embraced the seaside theme with outfits ranging from lifeguards and mermaids to pirates and holidaymakers.

Staff and residents threw themselves into the event, arriving in colourful costumes, enjoying music and dancing, and taking part in seaside-themed competitions and activities. There was plenty to eat and drink too, with traditional treats that helped bring the seaside atmosphere indoors.

The celebration formed part of Milewood’s commitment to creating inclusive opportunities for the adults with learning disabilities and complex needs it cares for, ensuring they can enjoy fun, friendship and community life in a supportive setting. Events like this are designed to bring people together, strengthen social connections and promote a real sense of belonging.

Martyn Heginbotham, chief executive at Milewood, said: “It was fantastic to see everyone really getting into the seaside spirit; the creativity and effort put into the costumes was incredible. What really shone through, though, was the joy of people coming together, supporting one another and celebrating as a community. These events are about inclusion, laughter and making memories, and this one certainly delivered.”

The Seaside Fancy Dress Afternoon follows on from the success of other recent Milewood gatherings, with the organisation committed to providing the kind of fun-filled, inclusive experiences that help the people it supports to thrive. Plans are already under way for future events, as Milewood looks to build on the positive energy and sense of community in the areas surrounding its services.
