York support worker wins national newcomer accolade at second annual Milewood Awards

Jake Walton, a support worker at Hawthorn House in York, has been named ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the second annual Milewood Awards.

Jake, who joined Hawthorn House less than a year ago, has made an exceptional impact on both colleagues and the people he supports. His enthusiasm and natural ability to build meaningful relationships have quickly made him a valued member of the team.

Hawthorn House is a small residential service in Strensall, York, providing care and support for up to nine people with learning disabilities, autism, and a range of additional needs. The home focuses on person?centred care, promoting independence, daily living skills, and meaningful activities both within the service and in the wider community. Hawthorn House is operated by Milewood Healthcare Ltd, a national provider of specialist living services for adults with disabilities.

Speaking after receiving the award, Jake said: “I’m genuinely thrilled to have been recognised in this way. Starting my career in care has been really rewarding, and I’m so grateful for the support and encouragement I’ve received from everyone at Hawthorn House.

“Working with our residents is a privilege, and I’m excited to continue learning and growing in this role.”

Martyn Heginbotham, chief executive of Milewood Healthcare, praised Jake’s achievement, adding: “Jake embodies the very best of what we look for in our new team members. His willingness to learn and instinctive person-centred approach have made a real difference within a very short space of time. The Newcomer of the Year Award is designed to celebrate emerging talent across Milewood, and Jake is a truly deserving recipient.”

The Milewood Awards, now in their second year, were established to recognise excellence and celebrate individuals who consistently go above and beyond across the organisation. Jake’s win shines a light on the outstanding work taking place at Hawthorn House and reflects Milewood’s commitment to nurturing talent and delivering high-quality care.
