About Sutherland House
Here at Sutherland House, we strive to promote independence and dignity – this promise from us extends to local communities & activities too! Our Service Users benefit from great communal links, we have a job scheme in the process of being implemented alongside a local café, to give all our Service Users the transferable experience they need to progress onto jobs, activities, and general day to day living which in turn (we feel) provides a better quality of life and a firm sense of wellbeing.
We have an added bonus here at Sutherland House because we’re only a 10-minute walk from the city centre. We have great public transport to allow us to get anywhere in York in under 30 minutes, and we also have one of the best rail infrastructures in the country to give us that extra bit of freedom to travel anywhere!
Our Service Users here at Sutherland House also have great links to our other supported services here in York. We do weekly activities alongside the other houses to allow our Service Users to build meaningful relationships with people who understand the structure of supported living and who understand that we strive to teach and learn the skills needed to ultimately be independent in our lives. A few of the activities are listed here:
- Bowling
- Cinemas
- Communal BBQ’s
- Eden Camp
- Blackpool Illuminations
This is simply a few! There’s a new activity every weekend supported by a full staff team across all three of the supported living services.
A home from home...
At Sutherland House everything we do is based on choice. The Service Users choice of activity, their choice of meals, their choice on clothing to name a few. However, it doesn’t stop there. We use a multi-agency approach to help design and collate an individual’s care plan to best support their needs. Individuals staying with us get to choose every detail that is included in this, alongside which family & friends have an input.
We cater to a wide range of needs here at Sutherland, from Autism, Asperger’s, Mild to Sever Learning Difficulties. There is nothing our staff cannot handle. Our staff team is rigorously trained in all aspects of care. We receive specialised training to deal with complex situations and needs, as well as comprehensive training on how to deescalate behaviours that may challenge.
Our team of highly skilled and trained staff will work alongside individuals to help create, maintain, and adapt a routine that best serves the individual Service User so we can help them on their road to independence. We have previously made “timetables” at Service Users behest to allow them to have a visual representation of tasks that they would like to complete, and a realistic timescale to allow them to reach this goal.
Why choose Sutherland House...
Sutherland House is a detached terraced house that covers three floors. We’re located on Heworth Green, right next door to one of the best pub grub places in York, The Heworth Inn (formerly The Shoulder of Mutton). Within 2 minutes walking distance we have a Co-op, a lovely local Café, a Post Office, hairdressers, and a multitude of takeaways. All of this surrounds a gorgeous local park with a bowel green in the centre.
We have a beautiful Willow Tree in our front garden, which also has space for 8 cars to be parked across the carpark & gravel. We can accommodate 7 Service Users in self contained flats which boast integrated appliances, fully equipped shower rooms and a communal garden.
Sutherland House is accessible to all, with a path & small accessibility ramp alongside the home leading to the back entrance/communal garden. We also have a beautiful originally tiled floor mosaic upon entering through the front entrance. We have three floors, with three flats being on the ground floor, two flats on the first floor and two further flats on the top floor. These are accessible via a main staircase going across the three floors.
